The NHS 10-year plan was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to address the issue, but it fell far short of what is needed. The proposals on labelling is a step in the right direction to provide greater transparency and information for consumers, but it will not address the levels of harm on it's own.
We need a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy, free from the influence of the alcohol industry.
There is a wealth of evidence showing that addressing the affordability, marketing and availability of alcohol is the most cost-effective way to save lives and protect public health.
The evidence for change is there, and so is the public support. We just need the political leadership to match.
