The number of people dying due to alcohol is at an all-time high. Between 2019 and 2021, alcohol deaths increased by 27%. Sadly, experts predict this will continue to rise.

Alcohol price is directly linked to the levels of alcohol harm: the more affordable alcohol is, the more is consumed, and the more harm is caused.

Why we need to tackle cheap alcohol:

  • 1 in 20 hospital admissions are alcohol-related, adding huge pressure to our NHS.
  • 37% of ambulance time is spent on alcohol-related incidents.

Why we need to tackle cheap alcohol:

  • 1 in 20 hospital admissions are alcohol-related, adding huge pressure to our NHS.

  • Alcohol harm costs NHS England at least £4.2 billion annually.
  • It is cheaper for a family to buy a 2litre bottle of cider than orange juice in some supermarkets.
  • If duty was automatically increased between 2020-2032, it could prevent over 5,000 deaths, over 160,000 hospitalisations, and save healthcare services over £800 million.

Alcohol duty is one of the most effective ways to tackle alcohol harm, save lives, ease pressure on the NHS and generate revenue for the country.
